Nicolas Sarkozy è sempre stato un corpo estraneo alla società e al sistema francese. Ha un cognome ungherese, è astemio, non mangia formaggio. Soprattutto, è stato eletto all’insegna della «rupture»: la rottura appunto con il sistema. Solo che i francesi si lamentano del sistema, ma non intendono affatto rinunciarvi, a cominciare da una forte protezione sociale e dall’economia più regolata d’Europa. Sarkozy conquistò la guida del partito e le presidenziali del 2007 su una linea di destra dura, nella speranza di prosciugare il bacino elettorale dei lepenisti. È accaduto esattamente il contrario. Una certa spigolosità del personaggio non l’ha aiutato. Sarkozy non aveva né l’allure di un De Gaulle o di un Mitterrand, né l’empatia umana di uno Chirac o di un Hollande. Si è fatto strada accoltellando alle spalle il suo mentore, appunto Chirac, e ha assunto un atteggiamento molto duro nei confronti non solo dei delinquenti ma in genere delle classi disagiate. L’accoglienza non esattamente calorosa in carcere si spiega anche così. Il caso giudiziario non è chiaro. Sarkozy è andato a processo con un’accusa infamante: aver preso soldi da Gheddafi per farsi eleggere presidente, e averlo bombardato per cancellare le tracce. Questa accusa non è stata provata. In carcere finisce in seguito alla condanna per associazione a delinquere, al fianco del segretario generale dell’Eliseo Claude Guéant, suo vero braccio destro. Certo, il pensiero che secondo la magistratura francese la presidenza della Repubblica fosse diventata un’associazione a delinquere la dice lunga su quanto sia grande il discredito delle istituzioni, confermato dall’instabilità dei governi e dall’impopolarità di Macron. La strada sembra davvero spianata per l’estrema destra; eppure mi rifiuto di pensare che Marine Le Pen o Jordan Bardella possano diventare presidente della Francia, un Paese che ha anticorpi diversi dal nostro. In questa vicenda oscura, l’unica luce è Carla Bruni. Ricordo quando la incontrai per caso a Parigi, in una traversa di boulevard Haussmann, alla vigilia del ballottaggio del 2012: mi disse che il marito era incompreso e perseguitato. Molti pensavano che il suo innamoramento per Sarkozy fosse anche un innamoramento per il potere. Invece, per quanto con uno stile a volte discutibile, l’ex première dame sta mostrando di saper stare vicina al suo uomo anche nella cattiva sorte.
